Oh Crappy Day
THE STORY
Jared, an aspiring filmmaker, meets Katie, a charming young grad student, on a blind date, and the two of them seem perfectly matched. Jared has a problem, though: an acute case of OCD, which he’s determined to hide from Katie. He succeeds for a while, until a sticky menu triggers his compulsive hand-washing, threatening the budding romance. It’s a classic love triangle, involving a boy, a girl, and a pair of hands.
(Short)
Lance got the idea for Oh Crappy Day from his own experiences dealing with OCD, a condition that can feel incredibly isolating, romantically as well as socially.
When he decided to write a script about OCD, it seemed only natural that the story would feature a character looking for love and acceptance. Lance knew the story had to be a romantic comedy – something with moments of awkwardness, discouragement, even panic, but lighthearted and hopeful overall.
The short screened at 37 international film festivals and won 11 awards, including the Lou Costello Award at the Garden State Film Festival — with acting legend Ed Asner on the voting board. The short has also been embraced by the OCD community, screening at the annual conference of the International OCD Foundation in San Francisco. As part of OCD Awareness Week, it has screened at Duke University, along with venues in Austin, Atlanta, San Diego, and Los Angeles.
